Quick answers

TKL buying questions

Does a TKL keyboard have arrow keys?

Yes. TKL layouts keep the arrow keys and the navigation cluster above them. Only the number pad is removed.

Can I add a number pad later?

A separate USB or wireless number pad can sit beside a TKL board. The keyboard itself has no built-in numeric section.

Are TKL keyboards good for gaming?

The narrower body leaves more room for mouse movement. Arrow and nav keys stay in standard positions, so muscle memory carries over from full-size boards.

What switch types come in TKL boards?

Linear, tactile, and clicky mechanical switches appear, along with Hall Effect magnetic switches on some models. Hot-swappable sockets let you change MX-style switches without soldering.

What a TKL layout changes

A TKL keyboard keeps the main alphanumeric block and the navigation cluster but drops the number pad. That leaves a narrower footprint than a full-size board while preserving dedicated arrow keys and the six-key nav stack. The layout is often called 80% because it retains roughly that share of a full-size keyboard.

The removed number pad frees desk space for a mouse or a second input device. The trade is no dedicated numeric entry, so spreadsheet and data-entry work relies on the top-row number keys. For gaming, the arrow and nav keys remain in their standard positions.

TKL boards appear in wired and wireless forms, with hot-swappable sockets on many models. Switch types span linear, tactile, and Hall Effect magnetic switches. Backlighting ranges from single-color white to per-key RGB, and some models include QMK or web-based remapping.

Build details that matter at this size

Case materials at this size include plastic, aluminum, and wood-accented frames. A metal frame adds weight and reduces flex; plastic keeps the board lighter for transport. Keycap material is typically ABS or PBT, and double-shot legends resist fading.

Connectivity options include USB-C wired, 2.4GHz wireless, and Bluetooth, sometimes all three on one board. Polling rates reach 1000Hz on wired gaming models and 8K on some wired TKLs. Battery capacity matters for wireless use, though it is rarely listed in full.
