Quick answers

Programmable keyboard questions

Can I remap keys without installing software?

Yes, if the keyboard uses QMK, VIA, ZMK, or Launcher. These run in a browser or as a standalone app. Some models require a wired connection for initial setup.

Do macros work on wireless connections?

Yes. Macros are stored onboard and execute over Bluetooth, 2.4GHz, or wired. No cable is needed after programming.

Does programmability require hot-swappable switches?

No. Programmability is a firmware feature independent of the switch socket. Hot-swappable models simply let you change switches later.

Can I program the knob on models that have one?

On supported models, yes. The knob can be assigned to volume, scrolling, zoom, or custom macros. Not all programmable keyboards include a knob.

Remapping and macro behavior

Programmable mechanical keyboards let you reassign any key and record multi-step macros. On full-size and TKL models, the programming applies across the main cluster, function row, and numpad. Wired and wireless versions both support this, though wireless models may require a cable for initial setup. The feature is implemented through onboard memory or companion software, depending on the model. Some keyboards use QMK or VIA firmware, which allows remapping without installing manufacturer software. Others rely on ZMK or Launcher for wireless operation. The result is the same: keys send different codes than their printed legends.

Macros can be assigned to a single key or triggered by key combinations. On models with a knob, the knob rotation can also be programmed. Hot-swappable sockets do not affect programmability; they only change which switches you can install. The programming layer sits above the switch, so any switch type works. Full-size and 96 percent layouts include a numpad that can be remapped independently. Low-profile and ultra-slim models support the same remapping but may have fewer available layers due to firmware limits.

Firmware and connectivity limits

QMK and VIA offer the deepest remapping, including tap dance and layer stacking. ZMK and Launcher provide similar control for wireless boards, though some advanced features may be absent. Wired-only models often ship with QMK or VIA preinstalled. Wireless models may use a web-based configurator instead. The programming persists across power cycles on all observed models. Switching between Bluetooth, 2.4GHz, and wired does not erase macros. Battery life on wireless programmable boards is unaffected by remapping because the firmware runs on the same microcontroller.
